In 1964 the US Surgeon General officially identified smoking as hazardous to the health. Yet, four decades later, almost 25% of Americans still smoke. The federal government required labeling of the tar and nicotine content of cigarettes. The tobacco industry attempted to allay concerns about smoking by introducing “light” and “low tar” cigarettes. However, the consensus has emerged that these products do not reduce risk.
